About the Soviet Navy G-5 Class Motor Torpedo Boat:
Developed in the early 1930s by the Soviet Navy’s “Central Aero Hydrodynamic Institute,” the G-5 Motor Torpedo Boat boasts an innovative hydroplaning design, similar to a seaplane’s float, combined with a whaleback upper hull. This design enabled the G-5 to achieve speeds over 50 knots, making it the fastest torpedo boat in World War II. With a displacement of 14.5 tons, a length of 19.1 meters, and a width of 3.3 meters, the G-5 was a formidable force. It was manned by a six-person crew and armed with two rear-released 533mm torpedoes and a pair of 12.7mm machine guns. Throughout its service, which included participation in the Spanish Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, the G-5 saw continuous improvements, such as enhanced radio communication and increased armament, including multiple tube rocket launchers. A total of 329 boats were constructed, marking the G-5 as a significant asset to the Soviet Navy.
